Mexico City, 15 April 2014 - Addressing over 1,500 development leaders on effective cooperation on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Ban Ki-moon cited the GAVI Alliance as a successful example of a truly global partnership.

“We have many successful examples of truly global partnerships that are delivering specific results, from (the) GAVI Alliance and (the) Every Woman Every Child initiative in the health sector, to the Sustainable Energy for All initiative,” said the UNSG in an opening statement which emphasised how the world has moved on from the traditional donor-recipient relations, with ever greater South-South Cooperation bringing new knowledge and perspectives.

Together with Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico and OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurríawith, the UNSG was attending the first High-Level Meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Co-operation.

GAVI’s catalytic role in immunisation and global health is guided by internationally agreed standards of effective development co-operation. The Alliance provides support that improves health sector planning, strengthens national systems, and contributes to health results through more efficient and sustainable implementation of national health plans.
