Statement by the GAVI Alliance's Chief Executive Officer Julian Lob-Levyt on the floods in Pakistan

Geneva, 23 August 2010 - With 1,500 dead and 15 million people directly affected by Pakistan's worst ever floods, I would like to convey GAVI's deepest condolences to the Pakistani people.

Our thoughts are very much with them all, including the five million infants less than 12 months old.

Julian Lob-Levyt, CEO, GAVI Alliance

Our thoughts are very much with them all, including the five million infants less than 12 months old. We are also thinking of our partners in government and the tens of thousands of civil society organisations that we work with, hoping that they and their families are safe.

Pakistan is a robust and very strategic partner for us at the GAVI Alliance.

Boosting immunisation

For the past ten years, we have been working to boost immunisation in low- and middle- income countries, such as Pakistan, preventing more than five million deaths since 2000. Globally, we aim to save another 4.2 million lives by 2015, using new and under-used vaccines.

Besides damaging or destroying nearly one million houses, the floods have hit 189 health facilities in 4 flood affected provinces, impacting Pakistani efforts to strengthen its health systems and boost the levels of immunisation.

In the months and years ahead, we look forward to working with our Pakistani partners to help rebuild their health systems and strengthen immunisation coverage.
