Bahar Idriss Abugarda

Bahar Idriss Abugarda is currently serving as Sudan’s Minister of Health and Population since November 2011. As a former political activist and equality advocate, Minister Abugarda is committed to the principles of universal health coverage and since his appointment has worked towards the goal of providing integrated primary health care services that focus on the needs of the vulnerable, particularly mothers and children. Despite ongoing financial crises, he has successfully led negotiations with the Drug Regulatory Authority and other government authorities to maintain the flow of essential medicines in Sudan.

Minister Abugarda started out in the private sector, becoming general manager of a number of international trading companies, before embarking on a political career. He served as leader of the opposition, and has been involved in negotiating multiple peace deals. At the global level, Minister Abugarda worked for active involvement in the decision-making process for Global Fund implementers.

Minister Abugarda also contributed to the Roll Back Malaria movement, representing the Inter-governmental Authority on Development countries on the Executive Board. He also chaired the Committee of the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (2012–2013).

Minister Abugarda has a degree in business administration and a post-graduate qualification in international relations.
