Gavi Matching Fund partners are having a significant impact

The UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged £ 50 million and US$ 50 million, respectively, to match contributions from the private sector. As a result, several companies are making a significant impact as partners in the Gavi Matching Fund:

ARK: Catalyzing health outcomes for children

Absolute Return for Kids (ARK) is an international charity whose purpose is to transform children’s lives. In June 2011, ARK pledged US$ 1.6 million to Gavi, becoming the first organization to accept DFID’s offer to match private donations.

"ARK has always believed that the private sector can and must do more,” said ARK Chairman Ian Wace. “Our pledge was intended as a call to action for that sector to rise to the challenge of partnership to save children's lives.”

ARK’s contribution to Gavi supported the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine in Zambia, where diarrhoea is the second largest killer of children under age five. To complement the vaccine introduction, ARK worked with the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) on a diarrhoea prevention and control program.

Anglo American: Working in partnership to address the burden of disease

With more than 95% of its workforce in developing countries, Anglo American appreciates the importance of strong health systems and is committed to improving the quality of primary health care in its host communities and countries.

In 2002, Anglo American became the first major employer to offer free antiretroviral treatment to its HIV positive employees, and in 2008 Anglo American extended the benefit to employees’ families and dependents. In 2010, it challenged 112 global businesses associated with the G20 to follow its lead in funding global health programs, pledging US$ 3 million over three years to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

In June 2011 Anglo American became the first UK plc to participate in the Gavi Matching Fund, pledging US $3 million over three years, which was matched by DFID.

Comic Relief: A just world free from poverty

Comic Relief is UK-based charity that strives to create a just world free from poverty. Its mission is to drive positive change through the power of entertainment. Since being launched on Christmas Day in 1985, live on BBC television, Comic Relief has raised millions of pounds through two big fundraising campaigns: Red Nose Day and Sport Relief. That money is used to tackle the root causes of poverty and social injustice. The idea is simple: Comic Relief makes the public laugh as a way to raise money to help people in desperate need.

Comic Relief featured immunisation throughout its Red Nose Day campaign in 2013, and its Sport Relief campaigns in 2012 and 2014. It also worked with its partner British Airways to make a seat-back film on immunisation now being shown on British Airways flights. Immunisation is also featured in Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day campaign this year. In all, Comic Relief has committed US$ 22 million to Gavi through the Matching Fund.

Dutch Postcode Lottery: For a fairer and greener world

The Postcode Lottery is proud to help Gavi with its ambition to provide vaccines against the five most deadly diseases for all children.

Dutch Postcode Lottery is a national lottery in the Netherlands that gives half the price of every purchased ticket to charitable organisations. Since being founded in 1989, Dutch Postcode Lottery has donated nearly €4 billion to organisations working on behalf of humanity and the natural environment. It is the largest charity in the Netherlands and the third-largest private charity in the world.

In 2013, Gavi was among its latest recipients, receiving €2.5 million (about US$ 3.3 million) at the donor’s annual Goed Geld Gala in Amsterdam. The funds were matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“For most children in Europe, vaccination against meningitis, measles or rubella is common practice,” said Dutch Postcode Head of Charities Judith Lingeman. “Unfortunately, for many children in the world vaccines are not accessible. The Postcode Lottery is proud to help Gavi with its ambition to provide vaccines against the five most deadly diseases for all children, specifically in fragile states.”

To that end, the “la Caixa” Foundation has worked closely with Gavi since 2008, contributing more than US$ 28 million (equivalent) from all “la Caixa” sources. This total includes from 2014 about US$ 53,000 in employee donations, as well as about US$ 407,000 in 2014 from its partners in the Business Alliance for Child Vaccination, a group of Spanish businesses that have raised funds for Gavi programmes. In 2008, “la Caixa” created the Business Alliance as a way to give Spanish companies the opportunity to collaborate with Gavi in the fight against child mortality. To date, more than 220 companies have now done so.

Most recently, “la Caixa” pledged an additional €1 million in 2015 through the Gavi Matching Fund to purchase pneumococcal vaccine for Gavi-supported countries. This has been matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the amount raised by “la Caixa” under that initiative to more than US$ 12 million, including the match. The “la Caixa” Foundation will continue to perform its strong advocacy work for Gavi throughout Spain.



LDS Charities

LDS Charities, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has provided relief and development projects in 179 countries, largely through volunteers. Last year, it contributed more than one million days of volunteer labor to support emergency response, clean water, wheelchair distribution, neonatal resuscitation training, vision care and food production.

Most recently, the LDS Church designated immunisation as a major humanitarian initiative. Toward this goal, LDS Charities has contributed US$ 6 million through the Gavi Matching Fund to purchase vaccines and support immunisation programmes in Gavi-supported countries, and it has pledged an additional US$ 1 million for 2015. This commitment already has brought significant resources, visibility and tens of thousands of volunteers to support vaccine roll-outs.

During Gavi’s historic immunisation drive in Ghana, for example, the church arranged for 1.5 million SMS messages to be sent notifying Ghanaians about the programme. Over the past decade the Church has mobilized 60,000 in-country volunteers in various locations who spent more than 782,000 hours encouraging parents to have their children immunised. As a Gavi partner, LDS Charities encourages private sector organisations to consider joining the Gavi Matching Fund.


Lions Clubs  

Lions Clubs: We Serve

Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organisation in the world. Its 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs are serving communities in 207 countries and geographical areas around the globe. In June 2013, Lions Clubs pledged US$ 30 million to Gavi to protect tens of millions of children in the world’s poorest countries against measles. Those funds are being matched by both the UK Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the total financial contribution to US$ 60 million.

Equally important, Lions will also play a key role with Gavi in social mobilisation efforts by working in developing countries with local leaders, coordinating community-level publicity and serving as volunteers at vaccination centres, in coordination with ministries of health.



Vodafone: Mobilising social change

Vodafone is committed to investing in mobile technologies that can transform healthcare in both developed and emerging markets

Vodafone is one of the world's largest mobile communications companies, operating in more than 30 countries across five continents and with more than 50 partner networks worldwide. As access to mobile technology continues to rise rapidly throughout Africa, Vodafone has launched a unique partnership with Gavi that is exploring how mobile technology can help African health ministries increase childhood vaccination levels.

The partnership represents the first in-kind contribution of technology and services through the Gavi Matching Fund and has been matched by a US$ 1.5 million donation from the United Kingdom. The 3-year partnership is drawing on Vodafone’s experience of developing commercial mobile health solutions and is focused on using the technology in remote locations to improve immunisation coverage and reduce drop-out rates. The project will enable health workers to register and update vaccine records, send targeted alerts and reminders to care givers, and monitor vaccine stocks via mobile phones. Vodafone is first piloting this use of mobile technology for immunisation services in Mozambique, initially at around 100 health facilities in Nampula province. If successful, it could be rolled out nationally and in other African countries.

US$ 1 = US$ 18

A study in Health Affairs covering 73 Gavi-supported countries over the 2011–2020 period shows that, for every US$ 1 spent on immunisation, US$ 18 are saved in healthcare costs, lost wages and lost productivity due to illness. If we take into account the broader benefits of people living longer, healthier lives, the return on investment rises to US$ 48 per US$ 1 spent.
