US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron have cited GAVI as a highly cost-effective, life-saving investment.

Speaking at a joint press conference at the White House, the two leaders referred to last year's landmark pledging conference in London,  where donors committed $US 4.3 billion to help GAVI and its partners immunise an additional 250 million children and avert four million future deaths by 2015.

US-UK commitment

This support for global health was mentioned as one example of the shared US-UK commitment to improving lives through global development and working to end preventable child deaths.

Child Survival Call to Action

In June, GAVI will join leaders from other global health organisations at a Child Survival Call to Action proposed by USAID Administrator Raj Shah at the pledging conference and organised by the US and the UK.

The two-day meeting, hosted by USAID, will look at a range of interventions, including vaccines and immunisation, that can dramatically reduce the mortality rate for children aged under-five.
