Vientiane, 29 November 2017 – In recognition of Gavi’s contribution to the health of the people of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR), Gavi and its representatives were awarded the Medal and the Cross of Development and Labour on Tuesday 28 November.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the Chair of the Gavi Board and Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, were awarded the Victorious Medal of Labour, Class III by HE Mr. Somdy Duangby, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance of Lao PDR, on behalf of the President, in recognition of their contribution to immunisation and health system strengthening in the country.

“I am very grateful to the President of Lao DPR for this award first and foremost for Gavi,” said Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the Chair of the Gavi Board.

Lao is an example of the success of the Gavi model. It has heavily invested in immunisation in the last two decades, raising its DTP3 coverage from 51% in 2000 to 82% today and introducing several new vaccines against deadly diseases. This has significantly contributed to Lao PDR nearly halving child mortality since 2000.

“We are all honoured and privileged to be part of Gavi and to support improving the health of the children of this world,” she added. “I would like to congratulate the government of Lao DPR for its impressive work in favour of immunisation and for its steady growth.”

Gavi Deputy CEO Anuradha Gupta was awarded the Cross of Labour at the same ceremony.
