On 26-27 January 2015, a high-level event hosted by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, marked the culmination of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance’s second replenishment for 2016 – 2020.

Under the auspices of Germany’s G7 presidency, the Gavi replenishment was an opportunity for global leaders to stand together and mobilise an additional US$ 7.5 billion to save 5-6 million lives through immunisation in the world’s poorest countries.

Gavi's second replenishment was launched at a high-level meeting hosted by the European Commission (EC) in Brussels on 20 May 2014 -- an event which was opened by EC President José Manuel Barroso.

Immunisation is one of the most cost-effective and impactful investments we can make.

Dr. Gerd Muller

German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development

The Vaccine Alliance was seeking donor investments of US$ 7.5 billion over five years to deliver vaccines and immunisation to Gavi-supported countries from 2016-2020.

With full funding achieved during the pledging conference, Gavi will be able to help countries immunise an additional 300 million children, saving six million lives.

A welcome reception hosted by the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany Gerd Müller was held on the evening of 26 January, and the Gavi replenishment pledging conference, hosted by Chancellor Merkel, took place on 27 January.
