Seven health and development agencies publish joint article in The Lancet ahead of final High Level Panel meeting in Bali

Geneva, 25 March 2013 - Seven of the world’s leading health and development agencies are today calling for the High Level Panel of the post-2015 development agenda to ensure that health remains central to advance global prosperity in the post-2015 era.

While celebrating achievements in global health through the Millennium Development Goals, which have contributed to a 40 per cent reduction in the number of children dying before their fifth birthday compared to 1990, the authors emphasise the importance of a healthy population as a prerequisite for development.

Final high-level meeting

An article co-signed by the seven agencies has been published by the Lancet to coincide with the meeting in Bali, Indonesia, of the High Level Panel. This is the final high-level meeting before the group submits its proposals to the UN Secretary General.

The article co-authored by Dr Seth Berkley (CEO, GAVI Alliance), Dr Margaret Chan (Director-General, WHO), Dr Mark Dybul (Executive Director, Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria), Mr Keith Hansen (Acting Vice-President for the Human Development Network, World Bank),Mr Anthony Lake (Executive Director, UNICEF), Prof Babatunde Ostimehin (Executive Director, UNFPA) and Mr Michel Sidibé (Executive Director, UNAIDS).
