GAVI's CEO talk’s health with the High-level Panel of Eminent Persons tasked with preparing a global development agenda beyond 2015

New York, 24 September 2012 - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced the members of a High-level Panel to advise on the global development agenda beyond 2015, the target date for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This Panel, co-chaired by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia; President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia; and Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom, have been requested to prepare a bold yet practical development vision on a global post-2015 agenda with shared responsibilities for all countries and with the fight against poverty and sustainable development at its core. ).

The Panel held its first meeting at the end of September in the margins of the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly.

GAVI CEO, Seth Berkley addressed the Panel on the importance of health in any development agenda. Dr. Berkley urged the Panel “to ensure people are at the centre of a future development agenda and that health is recognised not just as a matter of individual well-being but as a foundation of economic development and our collective prosperity.” To view Seth Berkley’s full address click here.

Working group of experts

In line with the Secretary-General’s call for independence, transparency and inclusiveness, Panelists aim to conduct a wide variety of consultations. The Panel will also consult with the open working group of experts tasked to design Sustainable Development Goals, as agreed at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June.

The Panel will submit its report to the Secretary-General on 31 May 2013.
