On 12 November 2011, World Pneumonia Day, Malawi became the 16th GAVI-eligible country to introduce the pneumococcal vaccine, protecting children in the country against the leading cause of pneumonia.

Vaccinator Clement Saidi was proud to deliver the first vaccine in front the Minister of Health, Dr. Jean Kalilani, and a large crowd of onlookers, which included Malawian and international journalists.

The new vaccines will protect children like Ngesa from pneumococcal disease, the leading cause of pneumonia.
