Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk was appointed for a second tenure as Health Minister in January 2024. He is a dedicated and passionate advocate for improving healthcare in Bhutan and is committed to ensuring that all Bhutanese citizens have access to quality healthcare services.
During his first tenure as Health Minister from 2013-2017, Minister Wangchuk spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services and enhancing equitable access to health services, cementing his legacy as a champion of health systems governance. His wise and decisive leadership resulted in notable achievements in the sphere of public health. In his first term as health minister, Bhutan successfully eliminated measles and controlled the transmission of rubella.
Minister Wangchuk also pioneered the adoption of technology in enhancing healthcare services. Through his strategic foresight, the foundational setup for adopting an electronic patient information system was completed and innovative solutions were embraced for the diagnosis of infectious diseases like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
He previously served as the Chairperson of the Bhutan Medical Health Council, Bhutan Narcotics Control Agency, Drug Regulatory Authority, and Bhutan Health Trust Fund; and the Vice Chairperson of the Wangduephodrang Dzong Reconstruction Project.
Minister Wangchuk holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (honors) from Hans Raj College, Delhi University. Prior to joining politics in 2008, he worked at the managerial and advisory level in the construction sector for over a decade.
