Syed Mustafa Kamal
Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination, Islamic Republic of Pakistan
Syed Mustafa Kamal is a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since February 2024. A former Member of the Senate of Pakistan, Mr. Kamal has also served as a Member of the Provincial Assembly and Minister of Information Technology for the Sindh province, as well as Mayor of Pakistan’s largest city district, Karachi.
As Health Minister, Mr. Kamal has emphasised priorities such as polio eradication, expanding the immunisation spectrum in the country, improving access to public hospitals, regulating drugs, and expanding telemedicine services to reduce the burden on major health facilities. He is a champion of pharmaceutical reforms and often speaks in favour of eliminating counterfeit medicines and strengthening regulatory agencies like the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP).
Mr Kamal is known for bridging local governance experience with federal-level responsibilities, bringing his tenure as Karachi’s Mayor to bear on national health policy. His leadership style reflects a blend of technical focus (on regulation, service delivery) and public engagement, especially in areas like vaccination campaigns and outreach to underserved populations.
He has an ABE from Sunway College, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; an MBA in Marketing from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK; and an honorary PhD from Mohamed Ali Jinnah University, Karachi, Pakistan.
