Advocating for greater visibility for global health priorities: Gavi and Virchow Foundation join forces

Geneva/Berlin, 16 May 2023 – Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the Virchow Foundation for Global Health have agreed to work together to promote and contribute to the attainment of the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development (SDGs). Representatives of both organisations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during the Global Solutions Summit 2023: ‘Realigning Societies: Towards a sustainable, inclusive, and common future’ in Berlin.
The newly established partnership reflects the importance of joining resources, sharing knowledge and pooling expertise towards achieving the SDGs, with particular focus on SDG3 “Good Health and Well-Being” and SDG17 “Partnerships for the Goals”, especially in, but not limited to, the areas of equitable health access and universal health coverage. The MoU provides a framework between Gavi and the Virchow Foundation where both organisations commit to work together in the following areas:
“With strong support from the scientific community in Germany, the Virchow Foundation is a strong partner for the Vaccine Alliance,” said Marie-Ange Saraka-Yao, Managing Director of Resource Mobilisation, Private Sector Partnerships & Innovative Finance at Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. “We look forward to harnessing Germany’s growing leadership in the field of global health to support the goal of universal health coverage and vaccinating the world’s children.”
“The Virchow Foundation is delighted to partner with the Vaccine Alliance, a global leader in primary care, to further inspire positive change towards reaching health equity. Through this cooperation, we can build effective bridges for international players to engage with Germany while advancing our joint goals of reaching the UN 2030 Agenda and health for all.” Victoria Grandsoult, Managing Director, Virchow Foundation for Global Health.
Germany is a leading, longstanding supporter of global health and a recognized anchor donor of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance – the public-private partnership that helps vaccinate nearly half the world's children, with 65 million unique children immunised with Gavi-supported vaccines in 2021 alone. The Virchow Foundation is amongst the key German institutions focused on Global Health in Germany, mobilising engagement from across sectors to raise awareness and stimulate innovative solutions in health through the annual awarding of the Virchow Prize for Global Health.
