Geneva, 26 May 2025 – Brazil’s Minister of Health, Dr Alexandre Padilha, and Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, met on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly to reaffirm and strengthen their long-standing partnership focused on equitable access to vaccines and resilient health systems.
The meeting marked the signing of a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), building on nearly two decades of collaboration between Brazil and Gavi. The updated MoU strengthens strategic cooperation in three key areas:
Gavi currently procures millions of yellow fever vaccine doses from Bio-Manguinhos, Brazil’s public sector manufacturer. This not only supports immunisation efforts in Gavi-supported countries, but also promotes Brazil’s vaccine production capacity and export footprint. Gavi is also closely monitoring Brazil’s ongoing development of dengue vaccines, which could play an important role in responding to the growing burden of vector-borne diseases.
Brazil and other countries can benefit from Gavi-funded global emergency vaccine stockpiles, which includes vaccines for cholera, yellow fever, meningitis, Ebola and mpox. This mechanism enables rapid response to outbreaks and is a critical part of global pandemic preparedness.
As the host of both COP30 and the BRICS Summit in 2025, Brazil is uniquely positioned to champion integrated approaches to global health, equity and climate resilience. The renewed Gavi-Brazil partnership reflects these shared priorities and offers a platform to amplify Brazil’s leadership on the global stage.
“Our partnership with Gavi reflects Brazil’s commitment to health equity and international solidarity,” said Dr Alexandre Padilha, Minister of Health of Brazil. “By strengthening vaccine production at home and supporting immunisation efforts abroad, we are investing in a healthier, safer, and more resilient future – for Brazil and for the world.”
“Brazil has long been a vital partner in the global effort to ensure equitable access to vaccines,” said Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi. “This renewed agreement reflects our shared commitment to innovation, resilience, inclusivity and solidarity in global health. Our deepened collaboration will support Brazil’s continued leadership while also advancing our collective ability to improve global health security.”
