The main goal is to provide you with a quality learning experience. In turn, our interns will lend their expertise from various fields to our mission. As an intern at Gavi, you will:

  • Gain a good understanding of our mission, business model and day-to-day operations;
  • Expand your work experience with meaningful assignments and projects;
  • Develop your existing skills and learn new ones that will be useful for your career;
  • Work in a dynamic and multicultural environment that will help you broaden your professional network.

We accept applications that meet the following criteria:

  • You are currently pursuing a recognised educational programme in a field related to Gavi’s activities, leading to a formal undergraduate or post-graduate qualification/degree; or
  • You have completed your qualification/degree within a twelve-month period at the time of application;
  • You are fluent in English, Gavi’s working language;
  • You have not previously participated in an internship at Gavi;
  • You are not related to a Gavi employee.

Gavi recruits interns based on the needs of our various departments. If you are interested in interning with us, please visit our vacancies page where the internship opportunities are advertised. Please mention your date of availability on your CV. The application process is simpler and faster than for our permanent roles: it involves an application, interview and offers steps.

What is the duration of the internship?
Our internships are offered for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 24 weeks.

Are internships available on a part-time basis?
Interns are expected to work full-time. The working hours are normally from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm in Geneva and 8:30 am to 5:30 pm in Washington DC with 1-hour lunch break included.

Am I entitled to get paid holiday?
Interns are entitled to 1 paid day off per month.

Where can I find more information about Gavi’s departments?
Information on Gavi’s structure can be found here.

Do I need to speak French or any other languages during my internship?
The official working language at Gavi is English. However, additional languages can be particularly useful within some teams.

Does Gavi accept internship applications from international students?
In Geneva, our international organisation status allows us to provide work permits to candidates from anywhere in the world. In Washington DC, we are able to hire international students who study in the US and already have a J-1 visa.

How do I obtain a visa and other travel-related documents to either Switzerland or the United States?
The visa processing for both Switzerland and the U.S. vary from country to country. We encourage you to contact the nearest Swiss / US embassy or consulate in your country of residence for further information. Certain rules and restrictions may apply to obtain a non-immigrant visa. In Geneva, Gavi will help you with your visa application by sending an invitation letter to the embassy. Each selected applicant is responsible for obtaining the necessary travel documents such as passport, visa and travel ticket(s) and making their own travel arrangements.

Is the internship paid?
Interns who are not sponsored by their university qualify for a fixed Gavi stipend intended to cover the cost of basic living expenses during the internship. Interns are responsible for finding their own accommodation and will need to cover the full cost of travel to Geneva/ DC and related documents.

International interns in the US are required to have a social security number in order to receive a stipend. Unpaid internships (sponsored by university or another entity) do not require a US social security number.

Do I need medical insurance?
Our interns in Switzerland and the U.S. are expected to provide proof of medical insurance coverage for illness and accident for the duration of their internship. Gavi will not be liable for any injury, disability or death suffered by an intern or for any medical or hospital expenses, which may be incurred in the course of the internship.

Can I apply anytime of the year?
The need for interns by different teams arises all year long, therefore the best way to keep yourself updated is to regularly visit our vacancies page.

Is there a dress code at the Gavi offices?
The dress code is business casual.

Does Gavi hire interns into full-time positions?
Interns are eligible to apply for advertised positions following the end of their internship.
