UNICEF report shows strong progress on reducing child deaths

Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed

Geneva, 13 September 2012 - Unicef’s report Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed clearly sets out how far the world has come in reducing infant mortality which is very exciting but it also offers a stark appraisal of how much work still needs to be done to protect children.

The progress made on reducing the number of children dying before their fifth birthday from 12 million per year in 1990 to an estimated 6.9 million in 2011 is encouraging and the GAVI Alliance, through our donors and partners including UNICEF, is playing its part by helping to immunise 325 million children in the developing world to date and a further 250 million children by 2015.

GAVI Alliance

Supporting developing countries

Through GAVI support more than 70 countries have strengthened their immunisation programmes and introduced new life-saving childhood vaccines. We are also supporting developing countries to ensure that immunisation is an core and integrated part of their national health strategies and services.

With continued strong partnership and support from our donors, the GAVI Alliance is confident that we can continue to roll out new and underused vaccines to prevent even more children needlessly dying from preventable diseases.
