Conrad N. Hilton award 2009 for alleviating human suffering

Geneva, 19 August 2009 - The GAVI Alliance congratulates its partner organisation PATH for being awarded this year's Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, one of the world's most renowned humanitarian awards.

Prestigious

The prestigious award is presented annually to a non-for-profit organisation judged to have made exemplary and extraordinary contributions toward alleviating human suffering. Previous honorees are Médecins sans frontières, Women for Women International, Partners in Health, and BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee).

PATH works in partnership with GAVI on a number of programmes and projects, including the Accelerated Vaccine Initiative, which aims to introduce vaccines against pneumococcal diseases (pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis) and rotavirus diarrhoea in developing countries over the next years.

New vaccines

Pneumonia and diarrhoea together account for over one third of all child deaths occurring before the age of five. New vaccines are a cornerstone of an integrated strategy to save children's lives.

PATH is an international non-for-profit organisation, active in global health, working in various areas including HIV/AIDS prevention, vaccine development and improving health technology.
