Advancing Health Online (AHO), a fiscally sponsored project of Global Impact, was launched by Merck/MSD and Meta in June 2021 to advance understanding of how social media and digital tools can be used to improve health outcomes and resilience by bringing together actors from the technology, health, global development and academic sectors.
In September 2023, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, AHO and Gavi launched VaxSocial. AHO committed up to US$ 6 million, matched by the Gavi Matching Fund, to support a US$ 12 million portfolio of country-driven projects in India, Indonesia and Nigeria that used social media, behavioural science, trusted messengers and digital tools to build confidence in routine immunisation, and support vaccine uptake.
Across the portfolio, VaxSocial engaged more than 18 million users through social media content and digital health tools; meaningfully reached more than 130,000 caregivers through two-way digital touchpoints such as chatbots, WhatsApp support groups and hotlines; and trained approximately 3,000 health workers and community actors to strengthen vaccination communication. Early results showed measurable improvements in vaccine attitudes, knowledge, intention and uptake, including a 13.8 percentage point (pp) improvement in vaccine attitudes in Indonesia; and an 8.95pp increase in the probability of HPV vaccination following pharmacist engagement in Nigeria.
The partnership generated practical evidence on how digital approaches can amplify trusted human connection in vaccination communication. Key lessons from VaxSocial showed that technology is most effective when paired with local messengers, embedded in health systems and designed around caregivers’ everyday channels of communication, with responsible use of AI and chatbots helping improve user journeys and engagement.
