In 2008, the “la Caixa” Foundation became Gavi’s first private sector partner in Europe, establishing a pioneering collaboration to help protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases and expand access to immunisation in lower-income countries.
This collaboration led to the creation of the Vaccines4Children programme (formerly the Alliance for Child Vaccination), an innovative initiative that enables CaixaBank customers, both individuals and businesses, to support immunisation efforts through philanthropic giving and corporate social responsibility programmes. By engaging a broad network of private sector partners and citizens in Spain, the programme has helped raise awareness of the transformative power of vaccines while generating critical resources for Gavi-supported immunisation programmes.
Since 2011, every euro raised through the programme has been matched by the ”la Caixa” Foundation and then matched again by the Gates Foundation through the Gavi Matching Fund, quadrupling the value of each donation and significantly increasing its impact.
To date, ”la Caixa” Foundation has contributed €61 million (US$ 75.3 million) to Gavi programmes.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2025, the ”la Caixa” Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to Gavi’s mission by increasing its support for the Vaccines4Children programme to €3 million annually for 2025–2027, helping accelerate progress toward a future where no child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease.
